Chapter Nineteen

Yesterday

Vittoria knocked on the door of Stefano’s Victorian, her hands sweating. A lot was riding on this interaction with an uncle she barely knew. A lot more than she’d initially suspected. Now that she knew Tilly had been tracking down the Cozy Mystery Killer...

Things have changed.

She’d brought her packet of mementos to frame Stefano.

Bastard deserves it.

He’d stolen her mother from her.

A short man opened the door. He was older, with gray flecking through his dark hair, a little thicker through the middle, but she recognized him.

“Uncle Stefano,” she said.

He squinted at her. “Vittoria?”

“Can I come in?”

He glanced over his shoulder and grimaced. “Yeah. Sure.”

He let her in and shut the door behind her.

“You robbed me,” she said.

He continued walking to the kitchen at the back of the house. Stepping behind the peninsula, he turned to face her, looking grim.

“It’s a long story,” he said.

She took a seat on a barstool. “I’ve got time.”

He sighed. “I had a problem. I needed to feed it. Tilly—”

Vittoria decided she didn’t want to hear the story.

“Stop. This is about you. You’re just taking advantage of the family again,” she said.

His brow knit. “Again?”

She glowered at him. “Like when you killed Mom.”

Stefano tilted back his head and groaned. “Vittoria, please, don’t start that stuff again. You nearly got me thrown in jail once already—”

“You should have gone to jail.”

He lowered his chin to meet her eyes.

“For the last time, I didn’t kill your mom. Why would I kill my own sister?”

Vittoria shook her head so hard it made her dizzy, and she had to grip the sides of the stool to steady herself. “I heard you fighting down by the river. Next thing I know, you’re back at camp, saying she decided to stay behind and swim.”

“She did.”

“No way. She didn’t even like to swim.”

“She loved to swim. What do you know? You were a kid. You didn’t even know her—”

“And I never will, thanks to you!” she roared back at him. “You bashed her head in with a rock like an animal!”

Stefano raised his palms. “Whoa! She slipped on a rock and broke her skull. It had nothing to do with me.”

“You were shaking her down for money, and she wouldn’t give it to you, so you killed her.”

“I was trying to get money from her,” he admitted. “But I didn’t kill her.”

Vittoria clenched her fists. “You did. I know it. And you would have gone to jail if that damn bookshop owner hadn’t meddled in the investigation.”

Stefano dropped his gaze to the countertop, his head shaking. “That woman saved my life.”

Vittoria reached behind her back to retrieve the manila envelope she had hidden beneath her flowing tunic.

“You won’t get lucky this time,” she said, holding it aloft for him to see.

“What’s that?”

“It’s proof. Proof you’re a murderer. You even killed someone yesterday.”

“I what?” Stefano squinted at her. “I killed someone yesterday? What are you talking about? Have you lost your mind?”

“Have you heard about the Cozy Mystery Killer?”

“Who? No...”

“Well, you will soon. You’re finally going to get what you deserve.
